9 Ways to Rebuild after Divorce

Divorce is oftentimes a very time consuming, emotionally charged process. When it is over, it can feel like a ton of bricks have been lifted off your shoulders. When you have signed the final papers and left the courtroom, you may find yourself looking around and wondering “what now?”

This process doesn’t happen the same for everyone, but there are a few things to keep in mind as you embark on this new phase of your life:

1. Let yourself grieve.

Even if you wanted the split, the breakup of a marriage is a difficult time. Divorce involves many changes to your life and lifestyle, and making sure you say goodbye to that time in your life is a natural way to begin your move forward. Don’t be afraid to cry and let it out.

2. Journal.

Taking the time to write down and feel your emotions can help to greatly reduce the pain associated with divorce. It’s not something you are required to commit to everyday, but adding it to your weekly routine while you’re scheduling your days may be helpful. It will also provide you with a unique timeline to be able to look back and see how far you’ve come.

3. Keep your friends close.

Relying on your friends will keep you from doing anything crazy. They can hold you back from sending that nasty text, or posting that thing on Facebook that you don’t actually want your great aunt to see.

4. Talk to a therapist.

Crying on your friends’ shoulders and binge watching Netflix with a tub of ice cream to forget about your problems may feel good at the time, but finding a trusted professional will help you to create a path to your new life. They can be a trusted resource as you deal with emotions you may not have expected.

5. Make new friends.

Investing in new relationships is the easiest way to forget about past relationships. Your new friends will know the new single version of you, so you can spend a bit of time reinventing yourself. These new relationships will also help you to transition into this new phase of your life.

6. Get back into the dating scene.

Getting attention from new potential mates is a great way to get your mojo back, but be sure to do this slowly. Give yourself the space you need, and when you’re ready, go ahead and try online dating, or ask for a friend’s recommendation. Remember, keep it easy and fun, you don’t have to find your soul mate, but also, be open, and don’t let your past dictate your future.

7. Get your finances in order.

Taking charge of your financial situation will help you feel like you are in charge of your life again. Maybe your ex-spouse did all the work to pay the bills, but learning how these things work will help you to regain your independence.

8. Try Something New.

Picking up a new hobby or going back to school may be great avenues you can use to shake things up. It might even be as simple as a new haircut. You’ve overcome a major life change, and you should use this time to rediscover yourself and do things that make you feel good!

9. Celebrate.

Coming out on the other side of a divorce is cause for celebration. Enjoy a weekend getaway, or buy those shoes you’ve always wanted. Maybe your friends will even throw you a divorce party. Whichever way you choose to celebrate this milestone, remember that divorce is a process, and in the end you have come out with a new lease on life.
